Who We Are:
We
are a
group of professionals based in Windsor, Ontario, Canada working
with Murungaru Primary
School.
We
came together in 2007 and
decided to do something about helping children’s
education in Africa.
Rafiki Kenya is a group of individuals based in Windsor, Ontario
whose goal is to assist children’s educational prospects
in Africa, more specifically Kenya. The group was started in 2007
by several individuals who shared a passion for both children and
education.
In the summer of 2007 one of the group’s members, a native
of Kenya, returned home and visited Murungaru Primary School. He
captured in photographs ways that the group could offer assistance
to the rural public school that houses nearly 500 students, both
boys and girls.
Through subsequent
contacts with the Headmaster of the school, the following two
projects were deemed the most
important: new latrines and
the addition of a multi-purpose
educational room cum library.
New latrines would be safe and sanitary, replacing the currently
existing
inadequate
and
unsanitary toilet facilities. The added
multi-purpose room would house a much-needed library and counseling
facilities. The two projects will go a long way in fulfilling
the group’s mission and vision.
Rafiki
Kenya members plan to visit the Murungaru School in December
2009 or January 2010 with the funds they have
raised in order
to see through the completion of these projects.
The group has grown to nearly 20 determined volunteers. It
is non-religious, non-denominational, non-sectarian and welcomes
volunteers from
all walks of life. Although Rafiki Kenya operates as a completely
autonomous entity, the group values the collaboration and support
from other groups, religious or not, willing to help in its
mission. Mission
Rafiki Kenya serves as a development partner in
the support of children’s education and health in Africa.
Vision
Rafiki Kenya envisions a future where children have universal access to education in a healthy environment.
