KENYA IN BRIEF
Kenya is located in Eastern Africa and was a British colony until1963
when it gained its independence. Over 60% of the population is
between the ages of 15-35 years. The majority of the population
is dependent on a small number of gainfully employed people. Over
50% of the adult population is not formally employed. Most Kenyans
live on less than $1.00 a day. Life expectancy at birth is 55 years,
but this has been drastically reduced by the AIDS epidemic. The
official languages are Kiswahili and English. Kenya is divided
into 8 provinces, with Nairobi as the capital city. Kenya has a
democratic government. The currency is the Kenya Shilling and the
current exchange rate with the Canadian Dollar is $1 to 70 Kenya
Shillings. Temperatures average 20-35 degrees Celsius. The months
of January to end of March are the hottest, while April to August
are the wettest.
